Modern Furniture Designs in the 20th Century

Furniture has come a long way since the folding campstools and carved headrests of the Pharaohs. Styles and skills have changed and evolved according to the availability of materials and customer demand. Change was steady and slow throughout the 16th to 19th centuries, but the curve of progress then rose steeply in the 20th century. Furniture Designs by Mats Theselius

Meaning and functionality describe Mats’ furniture designs. Mats Theselius was a Swedish designer born in 1956 in Stockholm. His schooling had deep roots in designs and architecture from an early age. He studied industrial and architectural designs at the Industriel School. He completed his training in 1984, and became a lecturer at the University of Gothenburg in the School of Crafts and Design.

Mats Theselius’ works had abstract creations that transformed simple artefacts into wonderful and endowed pieces of art. In 1985, Mats came up with his first creation known as the Algskinnsfatoljen, which later became a hit design in Sweden and even all over the world. This furniture design was simple and beautiful. It was in the form of a cylindrical club that was made of steel and developed exclusively for comfort and prestige.

Mats also developed a magnificent bookshelf that has been widely celebrated till today. This creation was developed in 1988 and had the enormous capacity to hold about twenty five pieces of magazines. Furniture Designs of Eero Aarnio

They say that your life reflects your work, and this can never be truer with an esteemed and renowned designer like Eero Aarnio. His life and times have reflected his work, thanks to his passion and his love for safe types of plastic. All of his work has been made from friendly materials, and even though he has worked with traditional materials like steel and wood, he has been famous for using playful shapes and colours that are manufactured in plastic, including toys and children’s furniture.

Eero Aarnio studied from 1954 to 1957 at the Institute of Industrial Arts. After his graduation, he worked with a famous and also well renowned Finnish designer IImari Tapiovaara. In 1960 he started working for the Asko Company before deciding to go alone as an industrial and interior designer and establishing his own design office in 1962.
